Article Date: 04-22-2008

THOMASVILLE, NC - Lees-McRae College Lady Bobcats lacrosse player Desiree Cox capped an impressive first season of college lacrosse by being named the Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year at the conference awards banquet this weekend.  The Hendersonville, TN native was also named Second Team All Conference Carolinas.

Cox rewrote both the program and national record books in 2008, establishing the Lady Bobcats single season record for both goals and points in a season.  Cox' 75 goals scored are the most in NCAA Division II women's lacrosse this season and also lead the country in goals per game average, (5 goals per game, 15 games played).  Her 79 total points rank eighth in the country while her 5.27 points per game average place her tenth in overall scoring.

On April 6th, Cox established an NCAA record for goals and points in a game scoring 13 times and adding three assists for 16 points in non-conference action against Methodist College, a 24-18 win for the Lady Bobcats.  The record setting performance earned Cox her second Conference Carolinas Player of the Week award and also garnered NIKE/Inside Lacrosse National Player of the Week recognition.

A consistent offensive threat, Cox scored in every game this season, scoring multiple goals in all but one contest.  Cox was also a contributor defensively, leading Conference Carolinas in ground balls with 58 and ground balls per game averaging 3.87 per contest.  Her 18 caused turnovers and 27 draw controls also placed her second and third respectively among her teammates.
